Did his soul scan the „Vision of Peace?“

Did the scene ocr his sim senses fall

Where prelates should weep his decease,

And princes should bear up his pall?

Did that fading glance gather the bloom

And the weary lute echo the hymu

Of the glory that mantled the tomb —

the splendour no pencil may 'limn?

Ten thousand the banners they bore;

Ten thousand the wreaths they bestowed;

And ten times ten thousand looked o'er

The march to the silent abode.

There shone beauty, and balour, and truth

Of the East, and the South, and the West,

But methinks the sweet strains of the youth

Was the homage the bard would love best!

As they sang in the golden sun's blaze

The chant he had thaught to the brave;

And where, after many dark days,

His music did hallow his grave!

George O'Byrne.

Nottingham. England. July 4. 1890.

Świeci tam piękność, waleczność i prawda,

Przybyła ze Wschodu, Zachodu, Południa —

Ale najmilszym, zda się, było mu hołdem,

Kiedy w złotym blasku słońca śpiewała młodzież

Tę pieśń, której on uczył walecznych

I która po wielu dniach boleści

Zabrzmiała nad jego grobem.
